Johnny's Deli - Washington DC

I've been a fan of Johnny's Deli for many years now. Whenever I forget my breakfast or when the office thief swipes my yogurt or butter, I always order my favorite sandwich from Johnny's: turkey bacon and egg on wheat toast, no cheese. It sounds simple, but whatever magic my favorite short-order cook adds to this sandwich should never be changed. The service could be friendlier, but Johnny seems to know he has a loyal customer base, and everyone has come to accept his grumpy demeanor as part of the charm of his well-run deli. On cheat days, I can't resist ordering a steak and cheese—it's absolute heaven. Just the perfect balance, not too greasy and not too light.

This is an acceptable spot for a quick lunch near the courthouse, and it offers great prices. However, it has a somewhat worn appearance, which might not be ideal for everyone. (Update: Johnny’s seems to be closed and has been for over a week now, with no other signs indicating otherwise.)

This restaurant has a somewhat unkempt and gritty atmosphere, but if you can overlook that, the food is fantastic! I ordered an omelette plate and it was delicious, though I believe it’s hard to mess up breakfast. Additionally, the men's restroom was out of order. I gave it four stars solely for the quality of the food.
