I had mahi mahi with a Mandarin ginger sauce, a delight to the palate. One of the owners described upcoming changes as the restaurant is renovated. I look forward to a visit next year to see all the changes.
We stumbled upon this restaurant early this trip and returned so many times we joked that it 's the restaurant we 've eaten most often at in our whole lives. My understanding is that they are under new ownership and the naming of the restaurant is now La Kalle . We ate breakfast here four times! I ordered chilaquilas with salsa verde and soft, sunny side up eggs (I really stressed that, as I almost always find my eggs overdone in Mexico I like them barely cooked). I have to say, they nailed it 3 out of 4 times (one morning the whole dish was just not up to par the eggs were crunchy underneath and firm, and the sauce was sparse I won 't carry on about that one negative day though). I 'd always thought that a chilaquila was a chilaquila, but these guys made me change my mind. That sauce! I don 't know what they do to make it different from other places, but it was really tangy (lime, I suppose) and rich. The tortillas were crispy on the bottom and just right, with sauce throughout, and as I said, with one exception, the eggs were cooked to perfection. My husband fell in love with their omelette and had it every day. He said there was so much cheese that he felt he was eating queso fundido. Both our meals (daily specials) came with coffee/tea and juice/fruit. They served a plate of sweet buns to start, which we did not order but became addicted to (they appeared on our bill as being 8 pesos each). They were served with butter and a variety of toppings from condensed milk to pineapple jam. If I gained any weight on this trip, I 'll blame it on those rolls. Service was excellent the owners were always on site and the young man who waited on us a breakfast was sweet (we had an English Spanish language lesson daily), as was the young lady serving us a dinner time (a transplant from Oregon). We had a full dinner one night smoked tuna tostadas for me and bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed shrimp for hubby. Everything was incredible. So fresh and each flavour just spot on. The mashed potatoes that accompanied the stuffed shrimp were the tastiest I 've ever had (and I don 't even LIKE mashed potatoes). We returned for an appetiser and drinks one night too. We had fish taritas (amazing something like ceviche but better because the focus is on fish rather than all the other diced veggies) and the best mojitos I 've had in Mexico. They had them as a drink special and they were truly a 2 for 1 deal. So many places in Zihua advertise Happy Hour or 2 for 1, but what you really end up with is two crappy drinks for the price of one, or two crappy drinks for the price of two! This happened in our hotel, where the all day happy hour drinks were 2 for 1 two margaritas for 130 pesos! Meanwhile, the usual price around town for a margarita is 70 pesos...but I digress...anyway, the drinks were just perfect, and at 2 for 65 pesos, a true deal. All over Zihua, you will get superb service, with few exceptions. This place is no different wonderful, attentive service for sure. What set it apart for me, are three other things first of all, the flavours it 's obvious that they 've done all they can to experiment and combine the freshest of ingredients here. Secondly, the presentation every dish was presented with creativity in mind, and with the idea that you would/could eat everything on the plate (so they 're not just a garnish for garnish sake), and finally they have True specials each night. Many restaurants seemed to have Specials that were pretty much the same night after night: Tuna with shrimp for example stuff that 's already on the menu, maybe just with a something else thrown in, but La Kalle has creative, thoughtful nightly specials that combine fresh, interesting ingredients. This is a smart move on their part, as one would never tire of the menu there is always something new to try.
We were looking for dinner on a Sunday night and found this gem! The most impressive part was the food, we had the prawns and the mahi mahi that were grilled and presented wonderfully. The margaritas were fresh squeezed, the wine list was better than most, the lattes (cappuccinos were very good and the service was attentive, friendly, passionate and personal (we met Young Paulo!
