We had the hot and cold seafood platter, with a whole crab, 6 oysters, a bug, tiger prawns, smoked fish, and a plate of fried fish, calamari, and scallops. There was more food than the two of us can manage even if we had been starving for the whole weekend. Even though they warned us that the food may take 40 minutes, they were ready in less than 30 minutes.
We had a large group booking (38) and were fortunate enough to find that we had a long banquet table overlooking the Burnett River. We went to the order desk individually to place our orders and there wasn't a long wait before the first lunches arrived. The ooohs and ahhhhhs commenced until the last of our group (us) had their meals on the table. The seafood platters were popular and were devoured eagerly. I had a magnificent seafood chowder served in a cob loaf. It had many pieces of fresh fish, prawns, scallops set in a yummy sauce. All our party were more than happy with their selected meal. You can buy wine by the glass or the bottle at very reasonable prices. Beer, spirits, milkshakes and coffee are also available.I recommend that you book early as the restaurant was full when we ate. Booking early might also get you a view of the river with its many pelicans.
This was our first time to Grunske's on a Saturday night. I'd booked a table for 7 well in advance, which was fortunate as at 6pm the place was filling up. We made sure to get our order in quick as there was a table of what looked like 20 and we didn't want to be delayed. Ordering is easy at the counter, you get given a buzzer and collect your food at the counterWe had four children's meals, and three adult meals, a seafood basket, most excellent, a grilled mackerel and a scallop and bacon pie. All were quickly prepared so minimal waiting and tasted excellent. Good value 7 meals for less than $120. We hadn't planned to be there long and were in and out in about an hour. Grunske's is great food and good value. Book ahead to avoid disappointment at busy times.
We were disappointed firstly by the unhelpful serving staff, they should have been chewing gum and that would have completed the scene. They only wanted to serve the dishes their way no flexibility, the night we went there was a poor selection of fish and I know this is not always under their control. My wife's fish was way over cooked and dry, I really should have taken it back and spoken to the cook but my wife didn't want a scene. The restaurant was cold as they didn't have any heating on. Overall very disappointing night out which I suspect has been a good place to eat fish in the past.
A different restaurant experience - almost a self service. We ordered the seafood platter for 2 which would easily have fed 4 - so a lot of waste. All seating is outside, but there are screens & heaters. I understand Grunskes is an institution in Bundaberg & I can see people going there if they wanted a really good feed which is fresh & plentiful.
