It has been a few years since we stopped at this restaurant, now called Longfellow (but the receipt still says The Evangeline, as there is a motel on site as well) located on Hwy 1 near the Grand Pré site and tourist attraction. The menu is relatively limited, but they’ve upscaled a number of traditional Nova Scotia dishes, and what we had was delicious. My husband had the salt cod cakes which were served with a soft poached egg and cream sauce and topped with freshly chopped herbs, with pan fried potatoes. I had one of the specials; BBQ corned beef with onion straws and coleslaw served on a brioche bun with hand-cut French fries (with skins). It was scrumptious! We’re definitely returning. While we didn’t order any, they do serve alcoholic drinks as well. There is also an outdoor patio. The dessert case had a number of specialty-baked pies as well.
This restaurant is located in a rather boring strip motel on the outside, with the exception of a historic house. However, the interior is clean and modern with a Scandinavian influence. There are only subtle references to the local culture, such as Evangeline, Acadians, or the region. The restaurant itself is truly exceptional! We enjoyed delicious oysters and crispy duck, and were the only customers that night. The pies were just as good as homemade. Our stay was pleasant overall, but it would have been nice to have tea available in the rooms (only coffee was offered) and more of a celebration of the local culture and history, aside from the fantastic pies.
I have fond memories of this place when it used to be an old motel at the intersection of Grand Pre and Wolfville. It has undergone a stunning transformation! Despite being located near the main road, it is set back enough to experience no road noise. The rooms have all been renovated with a modern and stylish minimalist design. Close to wineries, restaurants, cafes, and more, make sure to try the fabulous meals at the Longfellow restaurant on site. The staff were fantastic, and it offers exceptional value, making it a nicer alternative to staying right in Wolfville.
We had been really looking forward to eating at Chef Ray Bear's latest restaurant. Our waitress was very friendly, service was nice, and the restaurant gives off a comfortable 1950's diner vibe. We started by sharing the Oyster's Rockefeller, which were perfect in every way. Very yummy! However, my main course the Eggplant Involtini was thoroughly disappointing. The portion size, for the price, was something more typical of downtown Halifax than the Annapolis Valley. The sweet potato wrap, which held in the grilled eggplant stuffed with basil ricotta, was nearly raw. My fork couldn't penetrate it. When I tried to cut through it with my butter knife, it simply squeezed everything out of the middle. The grilled vegetables were tasty, but the sweet potato was inedible. When I politely mentioned this to our waitress, she offered to bring out some additional grilled vegetables. I was disappointed that they didn't offer to replace the main course (but the steamed/buttered vegetables, turned out to be the tastiest part of my meal). In the end, I paid for a meal that I felt I did not actually receive.
