The greens weren't too salty and wet. The catfish nuggets were amazing and the ribs were falling apart in that good way :D only gripe if i could even have any was the Kool-Aid, really really bland but when you are serving all types i can understand wanting to play it safe with the sugar. Will be coming back when it isn't so busy. If the food was this good warm I shudder to think how great it will be hot and fresh!
The first time here and the food was amazing!!! Meals were large and filled and the prices were cheap! The food was so good that we later go back to get dinner!!!
This place is amazing, hands down and legitimately one of the best soul food spots in Washington. Friendly staff as well. This plate was $10!
Found this amazing restaurant by chance after a navigation error. Only knew of one other Tacoma soul food restaurant, decided to try it. Take out only. We were delighted at the Cajun Creole dishes, ordered and sat down to wait. Uncle Thurm's obviously has live music when possible. The decor has a sweet vintage feel, with photos of performers, some on the same small stage we were looking at. Glad to see how busy they were. Worth the wait for delicious, authentic food and knowing they're here to stay. I'm from down south and I have to say that my review is inspired and informed by the emotional experience it was to spend 20 minutes there, plus the half hour we spent savoring chitlins, ribs, chicken and catfish, made like it was back home. In particular, the greens are exactly like I remember and they don't skimp on the pot liquor.
Ok, so I don't normally post reviews but for this one, I will. I am from originally from NC and ended up in WA because of the military. I have to say that this place, the food, takes me back home. It brings memories of my grandma. She would start the day before, making Sunday dinners. She would get up super early, go to the earliest church service and come back to finish dinner. Everyone that was hungry just knew that they could get a good home cooked meal at Mrs. Betty Strickland's. I remember it being standing room only. Boy!! She could cook!! She also knew how to bring people together and I want to say thank you for the delicious food and good memories. I would definitely recommend this place, hands down!!
