Chez Bernadette If you are seeking a restaurant offering simply cooked ‘proper’ French family food, without any trimmings, this might be the place for you! As mentioned by others, the façade isn’t encouraging – indeed we dismissed it, and passed it by, for several months – but this was our loss. Booking is essential., as the close-packed tables are full of the local working forces. The limited menu starts with Soup, which comes in a big bowl – which is left on the table, for you to help yourself. An excellent Mixed Salad (almost enough for a main course) or a plate of Mixed Charcuterie comes next. Followed (on our day) by Roast Chicken, a Pork Casserole (which again came in a DIY dish, and thin sliced of Smoked Gammon. Puds were Chocolate Tart or Crème Caramel – and there was also a splendid selection of Cheeses, if you still had room. Half a litre of house wine, is included in the price per couple. Their coffee is excellent. For simple food, our only complaint is the quality of the bread offered –a supermarket standard, close-knit, variety rather than an artisan baguette. Service was friendly and excellent. We will return. The high marks given bare in mind the style of food and the aims of the restaurant.
