Las Velas Mexican - Pittsburgh

What a wonderful experience! I went out to dinner with some colleagues and thought, “Why not try Mexican food?” We ended up at this restaurant and I didn’t have high expectations, but it was absolutely fantastic. The drinks, service, and atmosphere were all spot on. Everyone loved their meals, and the shareable appetizers were delicious. My Carne Asada was amazing—perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. If you haven’t tried Pas Velas and you’re in the mood for Mexican food, you won’t be disappointed!

My boyfriend and I were recommended to try this restaurant because we were looking for authentic Mexican cuisine. While it met some of our expectations, there were a few shortcomings. We appreciated that they could prepare any of the margaritas frozen, but the mango chipotle margarita lacked both spice and tequila. On the other hand, the raspberry chipotle margarita was quite good! My boyfriend ordered street tacos, which were just standard and what we expected. I chose the tamales, which were decent. Overall, the experience was okay. I might return, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

The restaurant offers fantastic views of Market Square from its second-floor location. The queso served with the chips and the watermelon cucumber margarita were both fantastic. My husband and I each ordered a combination platter that included a taco, a burrito, and an enchilada. He chose pork and steak; the steak was tasty, though it was slightly overcooked.

What a fantastic restaurant! The food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas Mole, and while the enchiladas could have been a bit warmer and needed a pinch more salt, the refried beans were wonderful—I believe they are made in-house, along with the delicious Spanish rice. The Margarita was also enjoyable. Most impressively, my waitress, Ash (or Ashton), was incredibly fast, friendly, and attentive; it was a pleasure to watch her work. She moved with such rhythm and never missed a beat. I wanted to compliment her to the manager, only to find out that she was the manager herself! Overall, it was a delightful experience, and I highly recommend this restaurant. As a Top 10 USA Google food blogger, I can confidently say you should ask for Ash—you won't be disappointed.
