フィードバックを提供するYou cannot judge a book by its cover – or a restaurant from the first glance – this pretty unprepossessing little spot up towards the end of William Street proved to be something of a surprise, and pleasant one at that.Nothing to look at, but great to eat at – BYO of course and a couple of wine glasses were quickly rinsed and brought to the table – I suspect their regular clientele aren’t much for wine.The somewhat tattered menu is extensive and has a few pictures thrown in for good measure – don’t let that distract you – but be warned the serves are large – we noted that by a look at other tables and decided to order just two – and that did us in – my dining chum took the remnants away and I am sure they will get him through the weekend just fine.We kicked off with a dish of fish cooked in special liquor sauce and moved to fish fillets in hot and spicy sauce – the small serve (the large must be immense).Succulent fillets of fish cooked in a light, mellow tasting sauce, perhaps a hint of Chinese wine, and a touch of sweetness, chopped capsicum, bamboo shoot and fungi – and with a bowl or two of steamed rice was a good starting point.The second – served in a substantial casserole dish – was perhaps in the line of Sichaun food – again very juicy and luscious fillets swimming in a spicy broth with more than a dash of Sichuan pepper adding its characteristic numbness and heat – slippery, thin cellophane noodles bulked it up. Excellent dish.As I said the serves were large – and outstanding value – our food would have fed another two people comfortably – so go with a group of three or four or more to get best results I reckon. We will certainly be back.
Had pan fried pork buns (6 for A$7). Great flavour and value. Also stir fried beef fillet with celery, mushrooms and chili (requested no chilli). Very large serve with lots of fine cut beef for only $A 16.9. Genuine Chinese cooking, service. Simple restruant. ( mature Australian couple).
Aiming for quick light lunch today I decided to try the famous Xiao Long Bao (Steam Pork Dumpling) from Shang Hai Restaurant in Northbridge. It taste really good, and value for money. $7 for a portion of proper Xiao Long Bao. The wrap was soft but not easily break, so the juice landed safely on my mouth! Recommended only if you want to have a quick meal, as the restaurant is not really nice to sit on for long time.
We have been coming here for years. The xiao long bao (delicate steamed dumplings with pork and broth inside) are excellent, as are the rest of the dishes we have tried. Proper Chinese comfort food. The owner will often come out for a quick chat and will ask how the food is. Usually busy which is always a good sign. We often pop in for a tray of xiao long bao, only to end waddling out an hour later after deciding to make a meal of it!It's great.
Very good southern chinese food. Good place for dumplings of all sorts including those soup filled dumplings and szechuan beef hotpots and the like. Good food and good value not just good value for money. I appreciate that I am not a chinese person but knowledgable friends also approve this place.
