We arrived in early afternoon on a weekday and had the restaurant portion to ourselves. Service was prompt and friendly. They have two menus- an American style and a separate Korean style. The copies of the American style were so soiled and old that they could be rendered down for a weak soup. The Korean menus were fresh, plastic protected, and profusely illustrated. The illustrations were terrific since they showed what the Korean dishes contained, while the written descriptions were so badly written as to be of little use. Ignore all that, look at the pictures, and ask the server for an explanation of what the dish contains. That worked well for us. My spouse didn't risk the Korean opportunity and went for the Arizona Burger ($15.95 plus $1.99 for coffee) which she thoroughly enjoyed. There was so much addons with the well-prepared burger plate that she was unable to finish all of the presentation. With some advice from our server I went for the Korean soup called Yukgaejang ($11.99 plus $2.79 for a soda) so I could try the Korean offerings. This soup was served in a large stone bowl that retained the soup's heat for the extended time it took to eat it. Nicely spiced but not as much spice as the server had warned me. The soup was accompanied by a small side bowl of freshly sliced Chinese (Korean?) radish and a separate side dish of Kimchi - also a sizable bowl of fried rice. I mixed these additions into the soup as space became available, with excellent taste results as the the additions changed the composition . The soup was full of various vegetables, including what were described as fernbrake fiddleheads which turn out to be a fairly tough bit of vegetation that require some dedicated chewing but which will undoubtedly scrub out your system. This soup was interesting and I would happily order it again but they have several other soups and dishes I want to try before starting to repeat. This bowl of soup is a full meal. We'll be back until we've tried everything that looks interesting.
We decided to try Tucson's again after they added the Korean options to their menu. It was a Friday night but there was no need for reservations. We were greeted quickly and offered menus. I started with the fried dumplings which were very good. After that I ordered the Bibimbap, a traditional Korean dish that I have had before. The rest of my family wasn't quite as adventurous and stuck with the traditional menu. My bibimbap arrived in a hot stone bowl with a raw egg cracked on top( which didn't surprise me ) - however I know to stir in the egg to cook it before eating but that was never explained. This is Pembroke we are talking about and I would have expected the server to explain the dish upon arrival vs assuming I knew what to do. The dish was good, the rice was not caramelized at the bottom as I don't think the stone was hot enough. The flavours were good but I've had better before. I look forward to trying some more of their Korean dishes in the future. The rest of the family's meals were good- wings, mac and cheese and pulled pork, good but nothing to write home about. Will definitely try again and I am very happy to see new options in Pembroke aside from burgers and pizza.
The two of us were there for a mid-week break from cooking. Our server seemed a little uninterested but as we witnessed patrons at two other nearby tables express unhappiness wth their dinners, I would think that the wait staff all have an uphill battle, to maintain an interested demeanour.Prepare for a major Sugar Fix if you dine at Tuscon's. My ribs were old (- they definitely had not been cooked same day,) scarcely any meat on the bones and the sauce was cloyingly sweet and tasteless. When there are so many GREAT sauces available, there is no excuse for this very poor rendition. The rice pilaf I ordered as my side was substituted to be white sticky rice. No discussion with me whether I wanted that substitution. Cole slaw also old and overly sweet with too much of the runny dressing. The cornbread was so overly sweet that all taste of corn meal or anything else in the recipe was completely overwhelmed. A new cornbread recipe is a must,
We went out for dinner and expected to wait for our meals considering the number of people in the restaurant, but we had faster than expected service and the food was good.
