The Shaved Duck Midlothian

Excellent service and superb food! The dishes are very inventive and full of flavor.

We have visited The Shaved Duck before but it had been awhile. Made the trip from Ashland for dinner on a Saturday at 530 so we could sneak in a round for happy hour. At first we thought we missed it because the server did not mention it or offer the happy hour menu. We had to ask if it was still happening, then got an apology and the menu presented. We enjoyed both of our drinks, their take on a Moscow Mule was delicious. We ordered the chicken thighs and the duck breast. The thighs came out great and my wife was enjoying them a lot. The duck breast, unfortunately, was pretty much raw and very chewy as a result. I don't often send food back and was raised to just be grateful and eat your meal, but at $32 I was pretty disappointed so ended up flagging the waitress down. They made a new dish from scratch, which unfortunately took about 15 minutes or so to come out. It was perfect this time, very delicious with complex flavors, but my wife had finished her meal by that point, which dampened our overall experience watching each other eat separately. We rarely get date nights out these days being parents, so a bit of a bummer. When the check came, they took 50% off the duck, which I appreciated. There was no mention of it, so I thanked the waitress when paying the bill. Usually I'd expect a manager to stop by and mention the gesture as well as apologize, maybe they were not there that day? The food is excellent, and they offer a kid-friendly menu too. The cocktails are delightful. They also have a happy hour menu, and the appetizers are generously sized, so you can satisfy your hunger even with just a few samples. Overall ratings: Food: 5, Service: 5, Atmosphere: 5.

I ordered shrimp and grits, which were served lukewarm. When I inquired about bread accompanying the meal, I was told there wouldn't be any. I decided to order bread separately, but we only received two biscuits that were also not warm. As a result, we didn't eat much of anything. When the bill came, it totaled over $58. The food was only warm, and the biscuits cost $5 for just two, which did not even come with the jam that was supposed to be included. We couldn't help but wonder why the restaurant wasn't busy for a Sunday brunch at 1 PM. Overall, it was the worst meal I've ever had. Meal type: Brunch. Price per person: $50–100. Date: 05/21/2023.

First time going was Sunday, May 7, 2023. OMG DELICIOUS! I ordered the Bread, Beet Caspicio and the Crispy Leg of Duck. The duck was prepared to perfection! The purple sweet potatoes was just right!
