The drinks are consistently cold, and the bar staff is friendly, but that's where the positives end. On one occasion, the headliner was nearly two hours late. During another show, the air conditioning and fans weren't functioning properly. Most recently, the electric system failed, leaving us with just a five-song acoustic set. I'm very disappointed. This venue really needs to get its act together.
The parking situation is quite limited, and there are nearby lots with signage warning about towing. Paying $3 for a Cola seems excessive. This establishment seems to cater to a younger crowd, but with such high prices, it’s hard for them to afford anything. Consider lowering your prices, as it would encourage more customers to make a purchase.
Drink prices are exorbitant: $5 for a decent drink, $9 for a small Long Island, and $7 or $8 for bomb shots. These prices might be reasonable at a different venue, but at a dive bar without table service—where drinks are served in small cups with minimal alcohol—they're outrageous. To make matters worse, they don’t provide cups of water, so be prepared to shell out $2 for a bottled water if you need to stay hydrated. The food is your standard dive bar fare: convenient but still slightly overpriced given the quality. Also, since it's just a bar, be ready to pay the $3.25 ATM service fee every time you withdraw cash after spending a $20 bill on just two overpriced drinks plus a tip. If you decide to visit, go for the live music, but steer clear of the pricey drinks and food.
This venue has become jabroni central. First off, a couple months ago at a show, there was a fight involving multiple people and the ONLY person they kicked out was the ONLY black person fighting. That's not fair. Second.. last night I ordered a shot of their well vodka asked for a cup of water with it. They said I needed to be in a band to get a cup of water that I could buy a 16 oz bottle of water for $2. The well vodka was $5 for a shot too lol.. so I said never mind to buying anything at all because that's too high to not get any free WATER. They must be hurting for money. Here's a suggestion: stop being jabronis.
I'm new to the Kansas City area, and although it isn't perfect or updated, it's dark, has good drink specials, and every one of their employees are awesome. Aftershock is where I would love to see all my favorite bands. I'm big into the live music scene and it's big enough to fit a crowd, but smaller than a huge venue. The parking does suck because if you don't get a close parking spot you'll have to walk in the dark... BUT everyone going to rock and metal shows are always nice and look out for one another... (mostly). I forgot my ID one time and I would of had to dive 30 mins back home to get it and they just upcharged me (as a minor) to get in. I also like that some rock shows are guided towards the younger crowd, and they allow under 21 to get in with of course the upcharge. They are also always very responsive on their facebook page. They actually really care about the local artists also. I love this place!
