The experience you have at Cazemata - it's Cazemata not Cazarma!- depends on what you are looking for! If you look for an unpretentious place to eat a wonderful fish/sea food meal in a nice and typical seaside fishermen pub, that's the place. It's on the shore, the view is great, the music creates a nice atmosphere, the staff is helpful and very efficient, the food is great. It's mainly fish and seafood.
I visited this restaurant at the beginning of august. The place is situated on the beach so the view is pretty nice. On the other hand, the food wasn't the best one I had in this holiday. "Tochitura dobrogeana" was full of fat and the polenta had no taste. The fish is ok.
Nice place, right on the beach. On the expensive side for a sea shack, but totally worth the money. We had mussels soup, mussels in white sauce, rapana (never had it before, don't know an English word for it), the house wine (white). Everything was delicious. Mine (rapana) was a little spicy hot, which I liked, but perhaps the waiter should mention it when they take the order.
Since this was my first time in Mangalia, I followed my wife's suggestion and we decided to spend an evening at Puiu's Cazemata (blockhouse), not cazarma (barracks) - it would be nice if someone could change the name of this place cause it's wrong. Anyway, as I love fish very much, I was really curious to see what this place was really like, especially since I was told that it's been there for quite some time. When we arrived the place was packed and we had to wait a bit until a waiter came to take our order. Since it was our last night in Mangalia we decided to celebrate it properly so we choose 2 grey mullets with fried vegetables and a bottle of white wine with sparkling water. When they brought us the plates we were in awe cause two sea monsters rested on their death bed waiting to be devoured. The two fish were huge (around 400 grams each) and were tasty as f...hell. The white, sweet meat was washed down with a cold sprizter and the evening was perfect. This place looks really nice and its location is very attractive, with a nice view on the sea shore. The service was good, considering the hour and the waitress was more then helpful and polite. To top it off, I bought myself a big portion of anchovies to go, which I later devoured on a bench in the port, together with a stray cat. I really recommend this place, it's a very nice restaurant with a rich menu (mostly fish related stuff), a nice view and friendly waiters. Not to mention one of the best fish I ate in ages, even better than the one we ate last year at the cherhana in Vama Veche. If in Mangalia and hungry, go at Puiu's and you won't be disappointed. Safe travels!
