The atmosphere is fantastic, and you can find a unique cast of characters working here that you won't see at other Canter's locations. The technology they use is impressive; they manage the entire operation without computers, which adds to the charm. And who could resist the bakery in the front? It's a real gem in LA, and I've heard they also cater to Dodgers games and in Las Vegas. Where else can you get a corned beef sandwich at 4:00 AM? They are open 24 hours! The prices are a bit on the high side for a sandwich, but it's definitely worth it and stands out compared to other local delis.
This is a historic Jewish deli. The chopped liver is incredible, and the corned beef is equally fantastic. Some of the staff have been around for years. They serve drinks all day and are open 24 hours, if I remember correctly. The desserts, however, could use some improvement. There's also free parking available. Canter’s is an essential part of LA!
Canter's was my first experience at a Jewish deli, and I even worked there for about six months, which was a lot of fun. It's a bustling place, massive in size, with waiters who have been there for 50 years! One of my favorite items was the pastrami Reuben, although I no longer eat red meat, so that's off the table for me now. I really enjoy their omelets, and while I'm not usually particular about desserts, I absolutely love their creamy cheesecake. The soups are also outstanding.
After I grew up in Chicago, I know good Jewish delicacies. To live in Wyoming, I miss it very much. Canters Corned Beef Pastrami Sandwiches were a real treat for this now-small-town girl. I even took some home for my brother's wife. The Corned Beef Pastrami are wonderful the portions are huge! The rye bread potato salad was nothing to write at home, but who cares if the meat is made right. We all loved the bakery products they made the next day an unforgettable breakfast. My Fave was the Hamant, a short-bread-like pastry that surrounds a beautiful apricot filling. Canter's menu is enormous — 7 pages from everything from breakfast article child food to classic deli entrees old-fashioned cocktails. I wanted to return to L.A. to try some things that looked great. Try the smoked wild fish (black cod). We all swore about the buttery, rich, velvety fish with a slightly smoked taste. It is expensive, but the prices on the web are far higher if you can find it. This Deli is open 24 hours and has a food truck that drives around LA.
I love the Reuben sandwich and the matzoh ball soup is excellent. Their pickles are super crunchy and salty. Just perfect. Service is interesting: Either rude or extra nice, depending upon who you get. Just ignore the snippy waitresses and enjoy great food. The bakery is very good, too. Rum cake to die for.
