Myself and my wife were recently on holiday in South Africa and had some fantastic steak out there, but the porterhouse at The Lantern was right up there with the best we tasted in SA. Seriously. The portions are huge, you won't go hungry. Everything was fresh, tasty and the mushroom sauce was incredible – my wife was practically drinking it! The staff were extremely friendly and knew when to approach the table and when to give you space – always a bugbear of mine when they can't get this right. A really lovely place, with a good ambiance. A mix of couples and larger parties. We'll be back.
We visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell it's a family run establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! We then had a Porterhouse steak each, which were cooked to perfection. Alongside these we ordered the fries, onion rings and pepper sauce, which for us, were the ideal accompaniments. After these first two courses we were too full to try any of the desserts, but we imagine the options are just as tasty as everything else on the menu. Despite it being a very busy night, we couldn't fault the service we received. The servers were very attentive and ensured we were well looked after all evening they really made us feel at home. We can't recommend the Lantern enough. Everyone should experience this hidden gem at least once. We'll certainly be back when we're next in the area!
Delicious food and very reasonably priced given the quality of it. The service is second to none super attentive but very friendly and warm. It's too easy to walk past and barely notice the restaurant is there given it's location above the shops on Whitefriargate but you're missing out if you don't give it a try. The steaks are delicious and there's some lovely fish options.
Love this place. Last minute decision to get a table due to offspring sleeping out. Usual exemplary service and the best steak in town. Always our first thought when deciding where to eat out.
Definitely recommend. Very generous meal and the steak was cooked perfectly. So nice to eat somewhere that isn’t a chain and has a bit of personality. Great service and hospitality.
