Smitty's Family Restaurant - Killam

The food was good the service is slow. You can have breakfast all day long, which is always good in my books. We have ate here before but not for a long time. The food was good.

While driving back from southern Alberta, my wife and I stopped for a late lunch at Smitty's located just east of Killam, a small farming community in central Alberta. She ordered a unique dish - turkey, dressing & cranberry (initially missing) poutine, complete with fries, cheese and gravy. The serving was enormous and tasty. Of concern was that a part of the dish was cool. The turkey was indeed turkey and the dressing fine. Being adventurous I ordered a waffle with a coated chicken breast. I must say it was quite the combination, especially when syrup and some gravy was added. Unfortunately, the fresh fruit that is a part of the meal never did arrive.. I do have to say that the chicken breast and waffle, well, the went together wonderfully. Ice tea and coffee (a little strong), were the refreshments. Service was acceptable with a smile and an aim to please. We sensed that the cook was new and did not know all of the items on the menu that were included in the meals we chose.

Got halfway through my burger and realized I was chewing on a chunk of steel. Totally grossed out I brought it to the waitress attention. Instead of comping my customer and my meal they just comped mine. I find it hard to believe the cook did not see a piece of bunched up steel from a cleaning brush on the grill. After contacting corporate Smitty's to complain, the owner offered me a $20 gift certificate. I'll never eat there again!

Service was a little slow to start, they were having till problem's and that seemed to be the most important thing. The locals that come for there morning coffee don't seem to have much of a filter on how they talk, and are not quite about it. This is where the manager should be talking to these guys about how they talk to the waitress, and motel girl. It was good there was truckers, and workers for customer's other than the locals, even the trucker's couldn't believe how one fellow was talking. Food was good.

Of this type of restaurant, this was one other nicest I have been to Clean and friendly with a fireplace on a cold rainy day.
