The wall are paper thin and the noise levels are intolerable. The cafe downs stairs is now closed and the main restaurant is not the same. The halibut I had for dinner was rubbery and was flavorless. Front staff including the manager are not friendly.
I really enjoyed this hotel. It backs up to the scenic mountain. I recommend getting a room on the back side of the hotel so you can see the mountain with it's snow and waterfalls, and the cute homes painted different colors. The Baranof is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and banks... killer window shopping! The restaurant within the restaurant is reasonably priced, with none of the dinner options surpassing $20. The rooms are cozy. The one thing I don't like about the hotel is that it seems like they are always doing construction. Last time I was there, 4+ months ago, they were redoing the walls of the lobby. This time they were working on hotel rooms on one of the floors and they had closed the Starbucks that used to be in the lobby. They are doing something else with the space but it is... you guessed it... under construction.
Sub par hotel located centrally downtown but fairly washed up and as other reviewers have noted always under construction. On both my visits, windows were being painted. My first room was so tiny; my second larger, but quite old smelling and clearly not updated very well. There are no chargers by the bed and a sole plug in the room at the base of the lamp. There's no air conditioning and while it doesn't get that hot in the summer, there seems to be some residual heat that gets trapped. I opened my windows which helped but had to close them at night due to the noise. I will say the walls are paper thin. I could hear the words in my neighbors' conversations, and the words in the newscast they were watching, every cough, every toilet flush. At $200 a night, a little sound insulation would have been appreciated.
This is an interesting hotel. Chiefly attractive because of its location and easy access to the downtown shopping area and State offices. I have stayed here several times and usually enjoyed the stay. The good news is everything in the room has always worked. They are currently updating the hotel which is needed; I had to get on all fours and rotate the baseboard heating valves in my room to adjust the temperature. The BAD news: They put me in a room directly beneath a floor under renovation. 3 hours of hammering and power drilling on a Saturday afternoon sounded as though they were in coming through the ceiling. A call to the front desk was met with an explanation that signs were posted about the on-going work. With an entire hotel full of off season rooms I cannot fathom putting a paying guest directly beneath a room being renovated. The front desk said they would try to do something but the work could not be stopped. My advice; consider carefully staying here while renovations are underway.
Worst place every. I came in to drop off my luggage so I can go get dinner. One of the key card didn't work. I went to the reception to go fix the issue and the reception was giving me attitude telling me that it works. She did fix the issue but keep on telling me that they weren't any issue to begin with. After coming back from dinner, I wanted to take a bath at the tub. There were no clogged to take a bath and second, there were a hair in the tub. I was trying to wash away that hair strain and I noticed there more hair strand scattered all over the tub. The tub wasn't clean. The toilet bowl was black. When I complained to the receptionist, she asked how come I didn't complain to her earlier. What kind of customer service was that ?!?! If you want someplace nearby and don't care about anything else, then come here. Worst than a hostel.
