I ordered a pina colada and got something that no bartender would have ever made. It was undrinkable and was topped with cinnamon. Then we ordered chips and salsa, shrimp cocktail , and fish tacos. The chips are terrible and store bought. The shrimp cocktail actually turned out to be ceviche., even after checking with the waiter. The grilled fish tacos turned out to be breaded fish which my husband can't eat. They would not make any accomodations for us at all. We decided to leave and left our food and drinks we paid the bill (40.00!!)and they had added a tip, which we had to pay. Do not go there. There is much better food on the island for better price.
Tourist trap! Rip off! Used the exchange rate 12 pesos to 1 dollar when it's 20:1 standard and charged $8 for a plain coconut when everywhere else in the island is about $3/4 then had the nerve to ask for a 20% tip on top. Had to ram another golf cart to escape!! Hands down the worse service and value I've had on the island. DO NOT VISIT HERE!! (Chicken tacos were pretty damn good though...
El Comejen was recommended for its ceviche This restaurant is a local Mexican go to place Go in your bathing suits. Large ceviche will serve 4 people EXCELLENT
My boyfriend and I were on Isla Mujeres for a few days celebtating my birthday. We were in a mood for Tic Xin Xic and decided to give El Comejen a try. This would be our third visit. The first did not go well due to attitude of the staff. The second visit was much much better. And I should add the owner took immediate action upon hearing of our horrible experience. Once he confirmed my report he fired the offending waiter. I appreciated his immediate attention do that no one else ever had to deal with what we did. So we decided to try El Comejen for a third time. No suspense: they absolutely hit it out of the park. If j tried to find something bad about this visit I couldn't. Let me first say that this time El Comejen knocked it out of the park!! Big time!! The Tik Xin Xic was not only delicious and prepared to perfection but it was also about the lowest price we've seen on the island. $220 pesos and served with pesto spaghetti, rice and Ensalada that actually had salad dressing on it. Most places when your dish comes with Ensalada it's really just shredded lettuce and a slice of tomato. Not here. It was shredded lettuce and tomato but also had sliced onion, thinly sliced fresh jalapenos and cucumber. And it was topped with Thousand Island Dressing. While that might seem like a little thing it really shows that details are important to them. Service was impeccable. We were only one of two tables and pretty much every time one of us looked in our waiter's direction he came running to see if we needed something. We also had the guacamole which was very good. And it was quite a bit portion. So between the fish and the guacamole it was more than enough for two people to eat without leaving hungry. And excellent food at that!! Unfortunately they only had Sol, Tecate Light and Dos Equis lager as their beer selection. E isn't a fan of any of them and told the waiter he'd settle for a Dos Equis. The waiter told him if he liked he would run up the street and buy a six of Modelo Especial for him. E jumped on that immediately. We finished our meal and E had his 6 Modelos. I had 2 waters lol. When the bill came we fully expected a mark up on the beers. We know they cost around $16-18 pesos per can from the little stores but in any restaurant we've ever been to on Isla if the waiter's have gone to buy E's brand of beer they always mark that beer up to what they charge.. $40-50 per can. I'm not complaining about that just saying that's how it's always been. So you can imagine how shocked we were when the bill came and we were charged only $20 per beer. And the waiter even explained that the cost of the beers was $17 pesos per can and the extra was a service charge for going to get them. He said he hoped we didn't mind. Mind??? We we're thrilled with the arrangement to the point that E sent him back to the store for another 6, lol. We each had 3. Since we live in Cancun and frequent Isla it won't be very long before we're heading to El Comejen again. And if we're lucky we'll find it right and they'll have manitas de cangrejo (crab claws). But if not the Tix Xin Xic will be just as delicious. Or the Aguachiles. Those are too die for as well. Bottom line is I'm glad we have the place a second and third chance.
We first stopped here while we were visiting earlier last year while on the island during an excursion. We had rented a cart and wanted to get out of the busier playa centro and saw this place right outside of the busy area. We loved the all of the tacos and decided to find it again on our trip this time as well. No surprise, they are not as fancy as some of the other resturants on the island but I believe their food can compete with most of them. The staff is always friendly and the drinks are always good. We will continue to make it a point to stop for tacos everytime we are on the island. We love it!
