Sekiya's Rest. Delicatessen - Honolulu

This was my first visit, and I went in without any expectations, despite the negative reviews I've seen recently. The interiors could use some updates, but aside from that, the service was excellent and the menu was very affordable. We ordered the Mahi Tempura, Chicken Katsu, and Nabeyaki udon. I found the udon broth to be a bit bland and could have used more dashi to suit my taste, but I understand that everyone has different preferences. Having lived in Japan for many years, I'm accustomed to the flavors there. I’ll definitely be trying the Okazu section next, as everything looked appealing!

Great food and staff, but the place could definitely use a facelift. You feel like your dinner in the '70s.

An iconic Japanese okazu and restaurant in Kaimuki that has been serving comfort food since the 1950s. Unfortunately, my recent visit was disappointing and not worth the time or money. The staff seemed oblivious to my presence while I stood by the counter, and even when they finally noticed me, they came across as impatient and disinterested. This experience was a stark contrast to other typical Japanese okazuya, where the employees genuinely appreciate their customers, as the patrons are the ones supporting the business. It would be beneficial for management to foster a culture among the staff that reflects care and appreciation for this beloved nostalgic mom-and-pop establishment.

My meal was excellent!! The fog butterfish is a must! Our server was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this place for lunch or dinner.

This was our favorite place from the 1980s but now it?s awful! The saimin broth tastes fishy is no longer clear but cloudy. The cone sushi rice tastes like salted rice, no sushi rice vinegar carrots green beans are not mixed into the rice but put on top like garnish. Possibly new owners who aren?t familiar with okazuya or saimin. Total disappointment and will never go back because it was our 2nd time in a few months food is getting worse.
