In August 2008, the tireless host Anthony Bourdain appeared at the Pepper Pot during a filming of his No Reservations Show. His companions were Judd Nordyke (mayor of Hatch) and his beautiful better half Marcia (coordinator of the Hatch Chile Festival), who train Bourdain at the beautiful points of red and green Chile. Bourdain explained Pepper Pots Enchiladas “the best red enchiladas of his life. ‘
I have to say this was one of the worst Mexican food places I have been to. For growing hatch Chile there, they sure don't know how to cook it. No flavor, looked like gravy. Beans had a burnt taste. Wait staff was unattentive, place was dirty, left us standing there 15 minutes.to pay ticket, no one came to register, just walk on by. These young ladies were just rude.
This place is a classic small town, really good restaurant. I knew it was going to be good after being in there for less than 5 minutes. It was all locals, and they all knew each other. When they brought the chips and salsa I knew they weren 't playing here at all. Many Mexican restaurants bring a bland salsa this was zippy and freshly made. The menu was diverse but not so big they couldn 't do everything well. I had the Pepper Pot burrito, which had been featured on the Travel Channel. The waitress sad it was her favorite, so I went with it. It came smothered with red and green sauce, one on one end, one on the other. The pork inside was excellent, and the combination of that and the cheese and sauce made this literally one of the best burritos I 've ever eaten, and I 've eaten A LOT of burritos. The portion size was extremely generous. My wife had the quesadilla with chicken and it was huge, and also excellent. She got the Christmas Sauce on the side, which is a red and a green, and excellent. The people at the table next to us got a chili bowl and a taco plate. Both were massive, and this little old lady knocked down that taco plate like a sumo wrestler. I told her I was impressed and she told me she never leaves a bite when she eats here. The service was also very good the waitress we had was awesome. I live about 90 minutes from Hatch, NM, and I would drive that just to have the burrito again! The prices were also VERY reasonable, unlike some of the tourist trap places. Kid friendliness: definitely kid friendly
We ordered the enchilada plate with green chili and egg a chili relleno a La carta and the stuffed sopapillas. The stuffed soap appears tasted like wheat paste or glue better tasting then they're soap appears. All you could taste was the flour and it left a horrible taste in your mouth. The chili relleno was blow average but edible the enchiladas with the green sauce that was very watery was the best of the food we had and I read it below average. Go to the place was full the service was not great but was not adequate either. We had to bust our own table so we had a place to sit
