The Star is an Enigma. It has a great selection of alcohol, though it prices it at central London prices. My wife, two friends and I visited in late October for a Sunday Roast. It’s our local, and although we have eaten at other local pubs before we thought we would try the roast at the Star. The meal was hugely disappointing. I had the beef as did my friend and the meat was grey, over cooked and poorly cut. The roast potatoes were anaemic, nothing like a roasty should be. The gravy looked akin to dirty dish water and swamped the plate and the Yorkshire pudding was spongy and dense. For this we paid the same price as a roast at an establishment that actually takes pride care in delivery of its food. My wife ate the pork, along with the same issues with the veg and potatoes this was mostly fat, belly cut and the crackling was just a lump of uncooked fat. This pub baffles me. The interior could be outstanding. It’s wood panelled and clearly has character, yet they’ve covered the walls in a bizarre mix of old music heroes, yet the music played is modern and loud. They could have included historic pictures of the common and gone more traditional but instead they have painted the ceiling gold and covered the walls in pictures that in no way reflect the character. It unsettling. They are perfectly located to be a cracking venue for people to settle in to comfortable surroundings, watch some sport perhaps, and grab some reasonable but good quality food and drink. Instead they’re a bizarre mix of contradictions with high priced alcohol and poor food. Get the basics right and this place will thrive. Carry on as you are and you will fall. The front of house were attentive and well trained, and deserve much better than the environs on which they serve. All in all, this needs work.
My pizza was amazing. It arrived nice and hot. Thank you I will definitely be ordering again. I've eaten in the pub before and highly recomend the food. The sunday roast are great.
Popped in for a quick visit to this completely refurbished pub. It was warm, welcoming and cozy with friendly staff behind the bar and good music at a conversational level.
I've been here 2/3 times since becoming the sourdough saloon. On Sunday having travelled along way to see a family member we knew the star was the only place on Sunday still serving great food after 4pm. I've had the beef roast once and a pizza once, both have been amazing so much better than the previous food offering... however what a shame that at 4.10 pm 2 of us ordered a roast, sat outside and saw the staff member we ordered from sit down to eat the same meal we ordered, even commenting how amazing it looked and that we made the right choice...50 mins later when asking where our food was to find out that they forgot our order, and if we wanted it we'd have to wait another 30 mins, to their credit they refunded the 2 non-alcoholic drinks and food we ordered but still....a let down, when I know how good it can be xx
