We are fond of the quirky, faded elegance of the Grand and find it a reliable sanctuary for afternoon tea and light meals. The live pianist in the Palm Court is particularly pleasant. Long may it continue

I booked for Sunday lunch at and asked for a window table. When we arrived, we were told that there was no booking for us. When I protested, they found my booking under "Afternoon tea". This was not a good start but things got better. The staff laid up a table by the window and looked after us well. The carvery was good slightly tough meat but good selection of vegetables. Drinks were very reasonable and the total bill was less than expected. The hotel has lovely old world charm and in a perfect position for a walk after lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our day
