The cheddar jalapeno roll I chose as an alternate was also sold out. They helpfully have a plate at the ordering area with samples of all of the baked goods so I picked what looked intriguing, which was a mandarin sour cream muffin. I generally don't like orange anything, but I tried it it because it was different and I am a sucker for anything different. The muffin had fantastic texture. The orange flavor was not strong, which was good for me, but might not be for others. The toddler I had with me, who normally eats anything declined to eat any. I also picked up a bag of multi-grain buns in a ziploc bag. The man in line behind me said they are great toasted. I will reserve judgment until they are toasted because a bite as-is was a bit dense and stale. The toddler, however, happily chewed on a hunk of it for a long time. This served a valuable purpose because I didn't think the little one actually needed food at this point, but it kept him happy and busy. I also got a monster cookie, which is a giant oatmeal cookie with oats, peanuts, M&Ms, peanut M&Ms, raisins, and probably other things. It was pretty good. It held up well for nibbling from throughout the day and I felt like I was getting some nutrition along with my cookie. Why Bun on the Run is getting 4 stars from me is that I liked their set up. They have quite a few outdoor tables, some with chairs, but many with logs with little covers. It was a nice place to sit outside and have a breakfast snack. The little one could then explore afterwards, and made friends, and had so much fun climbing up and down the little platform by the ordering window. The little one's new friends pointed out that there is a park across the street as well. The outdoor dining served us well as a break between rounds of bush shopping.
I remember this place from our time here in the late 90s. Their scones were so good, I couldn't wait to have one again. I was happy to see they had expanded to a bigger trailer, thinking it meant they were doing really well. Unfortunately, when places get bigger, they tend to lose something in their growth. Bun on the Run lost the care and love that used to go into their food. The scone I had was NOTHING like I remembered. It was like comparing a beautiful light feather to a dry heavy brick, it was TERRIBLE. Their chocolate chip cookies were just okay. We also ordered hot chocolate. They were nothing more than instant mix barely stirred into warm water. We dumped everything out, what a waste of money.
Cinnamon bun was ok, not soft and gooey as I wished. Not worth $4 in my opinion. Maybe their sandwiches are better?
The buns! These cinnamon buns are incredible, and very worth a visit. Delicious, not too sweet, and perfectly done bread. But don't sleep on the rest of their baled goods! We also enjoyed the savory scones. If you are looking for food for a road trip, worth noting that they start serving sandwiches after 10am.
Buns are good fresh. Fresh ingredients. Lots of options. Love the vegetarian options. Deserts look good but have always been dry or old tasting with not much favor. Buns/bread is delish home made taste. I want to like this place so bad. But the staff is hit or miss. The wait can be atrocious. A better method for getting food out and ordering needs to happen. The current method does not work for anyone. Food is great the only reason this isn 't in my regular rotation is due to poor layout, staff attitude and the deserts looking great but tasting blah. Last week after a long work shift I stopped by Bun on the Run to grab my standard turkey with provolone. I was given a bun with no turkey. I kindly let the staff know my order was missing the turkey...and she took the bun and gave me a weird look, she then asked her coworker if she put turkey on my bun to which the coworker replied yes I just made that with turkey the lady then looks back to me where I say it didn 't have turkey on it why would I make that up I stand there thinking my order will be fixed easily with her slapping a piece of turkey on my bun.... but nope! She then looks at me and says we will call you when it 's ready in shock I walked away from the ordering station and waited another 10 minutes as if my order had been thrown to the back where new incoming orders were paid for and placed. (I had already stood in line, paid and waited over 35min) finally I got my bun and was able to eat after a long night shift. The staff gave me a bad energy. The two visits before my deserts were beautiful but again staff attitude was moody and my deserts tasted old. I wonder how long they keep them out and I 'd like fresh baked signs for new products vs day old stuff or few day old. I 'm not sure if they were bland or just dry or both but something needs a tweek. After these last three visits I 'm going to hang my bun up until I feel like giving them another try this summer.
