Historically what differentiated France from the rest of the world was that the working class enjoyed good food as much as the middle class, and there were restaurants like this to serve them. As France has become more global, this kind of place, where you can get simple delicious food at a low price has steadily disappeared giving way to fast food, chains and sandwiches. The Cafe Restaurant de la Place in Epinac is a survivor and rightly so. We chanced on the place while cycling as a family around Burgundy and enjoyed a delicious light lunch cooked and served by the proprietor and his wife. Around us were retired miners and other locals playing the lotto machine, watching the horse racing and drinking carafes of red wine.
