This hotel is like the pig you put lipstick on but it still is a pig. I was there for a conference and while the place looked very eye appealing, it was not very functional at all. As a larger guy, the toilets in the room were unusable because they used to large of a sink in the bathroom that you touched both sides when you sat down. When we told the person working the front counter when we checked out, their only response was, “well it is a 100 year old building.” We stayed 5 nights and had to call down for towels 3 of those days because they didn’t clean the room. You supposedly had to request a cleaning. Then to top it off, one of the elevators broke while we were there. Beds were comfortable though.
Probably one of the singular worst hotel experiences of my life and in my home state. Cockroaches in the hallway and vomit found in a dresser drawer… after complaining and asking for another room we were told they didn’t have any to accommodate our family of four. After we found a cockroach in our bed we finally decided to leave and go to another hotel for the night. Front desk staff seemed inept and speechless and unable to help us… this was after a long day for our family with two small children and at 11pm, you should honestly be ashamed. This is unsanitary and completely unacceptable accommodations that even the lowest class motel could do a better job.
This is the second time staying at this hotel. The location in the Court District is perfect. There are so many restaurants and things to do right around this hotel. They have a shuttle that will take you all over downtown and to the east village. I also will take you to the Iowa Cubs games. Edwin and Charlie were two of our drivers that were awesome. There was another driver who was just as awesome but I can't remember his name. Our room was huge. And it was clean. I will definitely stay here again next time we go to Iowa
Hooray for Michael the manager, who addressed our room concerns, found my rewards number and helped make our stay just wonderful. Amazing shouts out to Edwin and Charlie who drove us all around Des Moines in the shuttle, dropping us and picking us up at the Botanic Garden, the Sculpture Park, the baseball stadium and more. The shuttle service alone is worth staying at this hotel, but the location near the farmers market and downtown is also fabulous.Nearby activities: Downtown is one block away with bunches of restaurants and the farmers market.
