The fresh salads are delightful and light, but many patrons also indulged in fried options, such as a variety of crispy potatoes and chicken.
Like many other former patrons of the Sudwerk German-themed restaurant and brewery, we were thrilled to see it reopen. However, with the restaurant undergoing a significant change in theme and decor, we didn’t anticipate it being anything like before. In its previous incarnation, the food had become somewhat mediocre, but we always returned for the fresh beer. Unfortunately, our lunch today was quite disappointing. The menu was very limited, and while the fried chicken sandwich was large, it was dry. My wife's flat iron steak came with fries but was extremely rare. Both dishes were served with an excessive amount of fries, possibly to compensate for the lack of quality in the main courses. The Marzen and Pilsner beers were still good, but sadly, they weren’t enough to justify our visit. On a positive note, we were warmly welcomed and well served by the friendly staff. We truly hope that management will take heed of the many dissatisfied customers like us and expand their menu offerings.
Our meal, which included dishes for three adults and three children, arrived promptly, hot, and exactly as we had ordered. The chorizo Benedict was excellent, while the short rib hash didn't quite meet expectations but still had lovely flavors. In both dishes, I wished the potatoes were smaller for better texture, but the flavors were pleasing. We sampled the Gunrock Hazy and People’s Pilsner beers, both of which were very enjoyable. Unfortunately, they had run out of Marzen and root beer, but the manager did mention that they were brewing a fresh batch of Marzen that would be ready soon. This was a slight disappointment for us. Our server, who was new, did a fantastic job, and the manager was also on hand to check in on us. Overall, we really appreciated the improvements at Sudwerk and had a great time!
The renovation looks pretty good! They 've got the clean, airy feel with the toupe walls and dark trim, the exposed AC ducts, and the stained concrete like most places you see nowadays. They 're really pushing the outdoor beergarten vibe with the upgraded patio that you walk through to get in. Inside, the table and chair format replaced the booths. I do kind of miss the cushy booths, but the beer never misses, the staff is friendly, and the food is consistently very good. A Davis, CA landmark. Check it out.
Completely new restaurant opened 2023. Beer and wine were fabulous as always, and also like before, the food was lacking.Outdoor dining is a must. Indoor conversations are barely possible when sitting side by side with someone, let alone across a table.Previous review circa 2010:Excellent wines, but the food can sometimes leave me wishing for a little better.
