The Golden Lion - County Durham

After being unable to find a place to have lunch in Romaldkirk and discovering a lack of dining options on our route back down Teesdale, we ended up at the Golden Lion in Barnie. Despite its unassuming exterior and simple decor, the staff were friendly to both visitors and locals. The chicken and bacon sandwiches we ordered were delicious, with my wife even commenting that it was the best sandwich of that type she had tasted in years. The house red wine and Wainwrights Ale were also enjoyable, with the staff quick to replace a cloudy glass of ale with a fresh one. The meals served to other diners looked impressive and appeared to be good value. It's a shame that we live too far away to become regular customers of this hidden gem.

Fantastic pub with a great atmosphere, excellent selection of cask beers, a lovely beer garden, and a pool table. Sarah, the staff member, was extremely friendly and made my day! Highly recommend!

A traditional pub with a very friendly atmosphere. Staff very obliging and chatty. Food good. Pub fare cooked to order and delivered promptly. Good chips!

We dropped in for lunch whilst shopping in town and had a enjoyable time. The melodramatics of the barman as he flitted between bar and kitchen was a source of great amusement during our visit. Will visit again. Martin.
