We ordered almost half of the menu and the sweet and sour chicken was my favorite. Vegetables for my taste was a bit bland for my Filipino taste buds.
This place is not pretty. The decor is 1950s laminex. The service is somewhat offhand and disinterested. So why come all the way to Enfield? It is the best Peking Style Duck that will get this side of Beijing. The duck meat is crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside(as it should be). You also get a WHOLE duck( many places rip you off by only giving you part and charge you for a whole one). The duck meat comes sliced by the chef, and with pancakes and condiments. Next comes shredded duck meat as sang choy bow( ie meat in lettuce cups) and finally the remaining carcasse and bones as a soup. Now this place is no palace, the only menu items are ordinary BUT the duck is special. Do call at least 48hrs prior to book your duck.Believe me its worth th journey.
Came here last Sunday night due for a Peking duck craving. Read numerous highly positive posts and blogs about this place so we were expecting nothing but the best Peking duck in Sydney, how so wrong were we. Duck was very punctual as we preordered during the week (this was the only highlight of all other things) and was carved next to the main entrance door which we found a bit strange. Anyways to cut a long story short the duck was bland and didn't ooze out any flavour (Gordon Ramsay's wrinkly forehead would truly be utterly depressed). This is typical of not roasting it without enough internal spices. Skin was not crispy and duck was carved with more meat than skin 20:80 ratio. The carving method isn't your typical knife under skin and meat then peel away it was just more of a steak fork knife cut. Sauce didn't do it any justice either. Just your typical hoi sin from a can there was nothing unique about it. Pancakes probably from the freezer thrown on to a steamer for all they cared. Sheets were hard to peel apart after the half way mark and resembled a lump of circular beige play dough. Duck carcass soup was in the same bland style as the main duck dish however the chinese cabbage was not over cooked which they got right. Also ordered the stir fried noodles with chicken. Word of advice keep away. What looked like broken hokkien noodles stir fried with flower cut carrots and balls of chicken lacked everything sweet, salty and ultimately tasty. Better off heading to your local bbq duck roaster and making this dish at home. It would not only be a cheaper option but also one you would definitely enjoy a whole lot more. One thing I don't understand is that people continue to rave about this place, maybe they're just into bland food who knows.
You must make booking for the Peking Duck else walk in can't have it. I found the duck skin not crispy enough, more like roast duck. Duck flesh not chewy maybe it's caged duck. Taste alright, price for the duck is $70 include duck soup with Chinese cabbage. Have to add $1 for additional cucumber/sauce. Braised beef tenderloin taste so so.
This is surely one of the best Chinese restaurants for Peking duck pancakes. Unfortunately I had no room in my stomach to taste anything else on the menu. Do not be deterred by the provincial appearance of the restaurant. The duck was high quality!
