Not a lot to choose from. Seems overwhelming at first, but everything is mediocre. PARKING IS A PROBLEM. An hour is free, but there 's no option for two. You can only pay $7 for the overnight option. Aside from self serve, the people cooking for you oftenhave long wait time, even for something simple like sushi. There was just one option: california roll. not to mention it took20mins to make three of the same roll. Jamaican rice was dry, pizza had a rock crust. Desserts were average, nothing special. At this price point, it 's what you 'd expect. Beats Uncle Willy 's though. Dining interior is spacious and modern, feels comfy toeat there.
We arrived just as breakfast was wrapping up, so there were still some breakfast items available, which turned out to be a plus. The scrambled eggs were decent, nothing extraordinary, but I enjoy eggs. The turkey bacon was okay, although it could have been crispier. The waffle station was a fantastic option, especially for kids. However, the sautéed kale was too salty for my taste; I’d have preferred it with less salt since I really like vegetables. The rice and beans were tasty, and the jerk chicken was flavorful. I enjoyed the hummus, but the falafel was overly dry, making it hard to finish even a small piece. The rice and noodle stir-fry station was probably my favorite feature since you can choose your ingredients, toppings, and sauce, all cooked right in front of you. The salad station was fresh, offering a wide variety of vegetables and meat options, making it my second favorite. There was also a sushi station, but I didn’t try it as it didn’t look appealing. The pizza was average, but still acceptable, and the burgers were decent if you grab them fresh. The chicken noodle soup had a bit too much ginger for my liking, but I managed to finish it. Overall, don’t anticipate a fine dining experience. It’s a great option for variety, affordability, and particularly enjoyable for kids.
Many reviewers discuss the quality of dining without considering that this is a university dining hall, primarily designed for students. While the public is welcome, students are the main focus here. From my experience with university dining, including visits to UBC and UCLA, this facility is among the best. The variety of food options is impressive, most of which are locally sourced, allowing students to enjoy satisfying meals that cater to their preferences—all at a very reasonable price. It's also a great environment for studying while enjoying a bite to eat. Additionally, they provide a dedicated gluten-free area to ensure the safety of students with allergies, along with a kitchen space stocked with ingredients for making smoothies, waffles, and more.
I visited the university canteen and purchased a dinner buffet ticket for $17.50. The canteen was impressive, and the atmosphere was cozy that evening. Even though it was a weekday, there were over 100 people enjoying their meals, mostly students. The canteen featured various booths offering different types of cuisine, including Japanese, curry dishes, pizza, and burgers, as well as some foods I had never seen before. Since many of the dishes were quite traditional and unfamiliar to me, I personally preferred more typical European fare. Additionally, it took me 45 minutes by bus to get to SFU. Overall, I would rate the dinner as good, but not exceptional.
