Rendezvous Tea House, Cafe Art Gallery

We visited on 15th August. On entering we spotted the cake cabinet and went over to inspect what cakes there were. There were around 5 cakes plus some scones. I asked if the cakes were fresh and homemade, and which cakes were the freshest ones, to which the pleasant waitress said yes, fresh and homemade pointed at the most freshest which were pretty much all but one. I made it very clear that I did not want a dry or stale cake, and even said sorry for being fussy. The Victoria sandwich looked disturbingly dense and solid with no visible air bubbles, so I immediately gave that one a miss. I chose the Coffee and Walnut cake, my daughter chose a Chocolate cake and my Auntie chose a scone. We ordered tea and took our seats in the window facing the counter. Our cakes and tea arrived fairly swiftly. The tea was fine. However the cakes were very disappointing. The Coffee and Walnut cake was very dry and crumbly and when you cut into it you ended up with a half full fork of crumbs. The frosting was disgusting, it was like margarine with a tiny bit of icing sugar mixed in. The Chocolate cake was of similar ilk and the scone a dry hard lump. During the attempted eating of the cakes we were continually stared at by waitress no 2 from about 6 feet away, there seemed to be a couple of them, they were kind of quiet and saying the odd thing between themselves, almost as if they were talking about us, so we felt very uncomfortable and awkward to even ask each other how our cakes were. No one came to ask if everything was alright. We only ate half of the cakes, and even when our plates were removed nothing was said. When I paid at the counter the first waitress asked if everything was OK and I nearly complained but it was too late, and I felt awkward, so I just said Yes fine, paid and left. I wish I had complained as I would not of paid.

Called in for lunch, sat downstairs did not know they had a upstairs! Sandwiches were very nice and came with salad and crisps. The pot of tea was plentiful and the prices reasonable for the Lanes.

Fantastic service, atmosphere and a great selection of food and drinks. Will definitely be returning soon.

Really lovely cafe, quirky interior with comfy sofas. Staff very helpful and friendly. Good choice of gluten free cakes and scones with fresh cream and jam highly recommend.

Lovely little find ..quirky with a lovely combo of old and new. Cakes were excellent very very tasty. Nice selectionof tea's and coffee's. Waitress service and servers are polite and friendly. The sale of art work is a nice addition if art is your thing
