After 2 weeks on holiday spending time locally as mother over to visit from Spain. finally found a decent NORMAL pub!!!!! Serving normal food with a wide range sandwiches, ploughman's lunch, roast dinners, salads, pies...you name it! Friendly attentive staff, superb value! Beautiful quiet garden with play area plus dog friendly Like stepping back in time before gastro pubs and huge chains where you can just be yourself and have fun. Also more formal restaurant at the back. Please support this wonderful little gem!
We stopped by this restaurant after visiting the crematorium with our family, which consisted of 6 people including a child. We were greeted by a staff member who insisted that we sit in the restaurant with the child, but asked us to wait a minute. After some whispered conversation between the staff, it seemed they were unwilling to accommodate us. Another customer at the bar joked about the lack of space, and the staff seemed indifferent to our presence. Our Aunt, who has difficulty standing for long periods, was clearly in need of a seat. Despite there being empty tables set for dinner in the bar area, we were not offered a spot. Feeling disrespected and frustrated, we decided to leave and ended up enjoying a meal at Bentley Golf Club instead, which we highly recommend as you don't need to be a member to dine there.
I visited initially to see if I wanted to hold my mother’s wake at the Eagle following her funeral at Bentleys crematorium. I found the pub cosy, clean, with a welcoming atmosphere. The function room was a good size with lots of tables and chairs, and enough space to put up a large photo montage, flowers, battery operated candles and a large picture of Mum, Bev the manager was very friendly, professional and accommodating having catered for many wakes she was willing to adjust things to our needs. The buffet was excellent, plenty of choices, well presented, and the vegetarian food was clearly marked. Bev kept me updated on the bar bill and we were able to keep in budget for the 3 hours we were in the function room. We were a large family group aged from 9 months to 97 years and everyone commented on how good the venue was. The staff worked very hard behind the bar, yes guests had to queue up to be served at the bar when we arrived but it wasn’t a problem. There was plenty of parking and during the wake some of the local deer and fawns appeared in the rear garden to eat carrot chunks that had been put out for them, and entertained our guests. Once the majority of guests had left my partner ordered a meal of ham egg and chips (at about 8pm) and he said it was delicious. If you’re looking for a place to hold a function I can recommend The Eagle. Thank you to Bev and her team for making my Mum’s wake such a nice event she would have loved it. I was extremely disappointed with my experience when I visited this restaurant with my daughter for a Sunday roast. It used to be a great place for traditional British food, but the roast we had was one of the worst I have ever had. The only reason I didn't give it a 1 star rating is because our waitress was friendly and attentive to my daughter's needs. I ordered the roast beef and my daughter had the roast pork, along with an additional side of cauliflower cheese. The beef was tough and clearly pre-cut and left out for too long. The pork was okay, but also pre-cut and dry. The portion of pork crackling we received was burnt on one corner. The roast potatoes were bland and tasted like they came from a cook with little experience. The vegetables were overcooked and lacked flavor. The gravy was watery and lacked depth. The Yorkshire pudding was flavorless and seemed like it was cooked from frozen. The cauliflower cheese was disappointing, with a lack of cheese flavor and over-gratinated. The apple pie we had for dessert was store-bought and served with cheap instant custard. The prices for drinks were outrageously high. This restaurant, which used to be a local favorite, now seems like it could use some help from Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.
Had a terrific Christmas lunch for our group of 17. Food was great, fresh home cooked, delicious. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were outstanding. For a large group to serve, all the food arrived for us all together hot and plentiful, the waiting staff were great and the cook, we say thank you.. we all had an enjoyable lunch.
