Despite the rainy weather, it was the perfect stop on my morning walk with Pep, my Beagle. The pub serves breakfast from 10am to 11:30am on weekends and it was a lovely way to warm up after braving the elements.
We have unfortunately been disappointed with our recent visits to the Black Bull. Today's experience was no different. We ordered two adult Sunday dinners, one kids Sunday dinner, and one kids fish goujons. The service for our order was good, although we did have to wait a while for our food due to the busy restaurant. I made the mistake of ordering beef, which I remembered as being very tough. The portions were also disappointing, as the adult and child portions were nearly identical, with just one less potato and a tiny piece of cauliflower for the child's meal, at an extra cost of £8.50. We left feeling hungry, and although I mentioned it to the waitress, the response was that she would speak to the chef, which unfortunately did not resolve the issue. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
I decided to dine at this pub after reading mostly positive reviews on Google Maps. The reviews mentioned great food and a friendly, family-run atmosphere, which sounded promising. However, upon entering the pub, we were greeted with a strong smell of damp dog hair. The bar was full of dogs and their owners, and the restaurant area, although empty, also had a lingering smell. The menu seemed promising, offering above-average pub fare based on the descriptions. Unfortunately, the food we received was mediocre at best. The chips had a homemade feel to them and were enjoyable. The kids enjoyed their meals, but my eldest noticed that the sauce seemed to be from a jar. The Cumberland sausage and mash dish, priced at £14, was disappointing with three sausages identical to the two in the children's meal priced at £6, accompanied by dry, bland mashed potatoes. It did not justify the price we paid. The restroom facilities were unclean, and we even found a dog hair on our table. After checking the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating, which was an appalling 2, I realized that the pub had been marked down for cleanliness and the condition of its facilities and building. It became apparent that they likely have enough regulars who are dog owners to keep the positive reviews coming in. It is unlikely that anyone who values hygiene would write a positive review of this establishment.
Fantastic Sunday Roast in the most beautiful country setting overlooking the reservoir. Will be back thank you for the warm welcome
Waited an hour for food ! Very good as always and the 3 of us were very happy with it . However , as we left , we were followed and stopped by the door by jade to ask about our payment which was on the table in cash with a tip . So embarrassed !
