The building is on the property of an extensive and beautiful working farm, growing the trademark apples and pears referenced by the hotel’s name. In front of the hotel, a vocal donkey and peaceable couple of goats serve as the welcoming committee; once inside, an impeccably clean, tastefully decorated, and clearly newly renovated space beckons you in. The room we stayed in was a stand-alone structure, also with lovely decor and obviously fresh from renovations, with an incredible shower and tub, soft and luxurious towels, and a furnished patio that overlooked the aforementioned animals. Then it was time for dinner at the Michelin-star restaurant, which was an experience I will never forget. The dining room was as impressive and atmospheric as the rest of the hotel spaces. Because of the once-in-a-lifetime occasion, my fiancée opted for the 9-course meal—out of the 5-, 7-, and 9-course dinner options—and we were blown away by every single item. All of the staff were highly professional and friendly, and our primary waitress Fiona went out of her way to make us feel welcome and explain each dish to us in detail. When dessert came around, the pastry chef herself emerged from the kitchen and walked us through the selection, including a lovely dish designed as an homage to the chef’s farmer father, and an acknowledgement of recent hail in the orchards that damaged the apples (but not their taste). In the last course, Fiona and the pastry chef brought us a special additional dessert in honor of our engagement, as well as a plate with the word “Congratulations” spelled out in chocolate drizzle. As if that wasn’t enough, both Fiona and the chef wished us happiness in our married lives together, and then, while we were collecting our things, Fiona and the woman at the front desk snuck to our room and left us surprise champagne and an additional little pastry in honor of our milestone. Breakfast in the morning was yummy, fresh, and generous, and we left with full hearts, and even fuller stomachs!
Arrived with high expectations and left disappointed in the meal. The flavors were an odd combination. We all left with a sort of disbelief that we just paid that for the meal and none of us thought it was good. It didn't work for us. So many dishes were creamed. Like baby food. Hardly anything to chew. Except the beef which was too tough to chew!
