フィードバックを提供するHey hey! I've found another Chinese restaurant I really enjoy. Food is authentic and a great price. When peaking into the kitchen, it looked really clean which gets a big thumbs up. The owner did not understand me so much as I cannot speak Chinese but the order was correct and delicious. Can definitely recommend the stir fried spinach, eggs, hand torn noodles, hot and sousour soup and a tofu dish that was ordered. I think I've found another local restaurant to drop in on from time to time.
There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in the Edenvale area, and Lu Dong is our family's go to place for a number of reasons. They serve decent food, the owner is friendly and they fulfill the most important functionality of Chinese food they're cheap.<br/ <br/ The owner generally gives genuine advice about their dishes, and can offer to mix and match ingredients, I.e replace bean sprout with veggies or add extra beef. The other time we pointed out that they served us a vegetarian dish with meat in it, she immediately apologized and offered to replace the dish. It sounds normal, but having a good customer service is very rare in these small restaurants. But... I'm not sure if they speak English. They do have English menu though!<br/ <br/ A couple of my personal favorites: sizzling beef, Kung pao chicken, beef noodles, crispy prawns<br/ <br/ Bottomline: it's around the corner of my house, so yeah, definitely a regular here.<br/ <br/ Pros: cheap decent food, decent service (not sure if you don't speak mandarin though... <br/ Cons: super dodgy neighborhood, kinda dingy if you're not used to it, quite oily
The food was fantastic—authentic and incredibly affordable. The service was typical for a small family-run restaurant: a bit slow and occasionally challenging to communicate, but the owner's son stepped in to help those of us who spoke English. It felt like a charming family-run business, with the father occasionally emerging from the kitchen in his chef’s hat to chat with diners, while the mother frequently came by to refill our teapots. Here's what we tried: • **Dried Beancurd with Cucumber and Chilli Oil**: This dish was very flavorful. The chilli oil added a wonderful taste, and the tofu was firm and different from what I'm used to, but still enjoyable. • **Lamb Flank Soup Noodles**: I typically prefer beef flank, but I decided to switch things up. The lamb was incredibly tender and melted in my mouth, and the broth was nicely flavored. The homemade noodles were fresh but a bit undercooked and chewy—there was a lot of it, so I ended up leaving half behind. I wish there had been a few more vegetables, too. It was definitely a good dish to try, but now I’m eager to sample their beef flank. • **Kung Pao Chicken**: The flavor of this dish was outstanding! I really enjoyed the combination of chicken and peanuts, and the portion size was quite generous. Our total bill was around R150 for two people, including the tip, which is an amazing value for such a large quantity of genuine and tasty food. Just overlook the massive fridge by the entrance and the slightly run-down exterior and interior. It’s absolutely worth dining in for the food. This has definitely become our new go-to spot whenever we get a craving!
Delicious and affordable! I can't wait to return for a sit-down dinner. The kitchen was impeccably clean. This is the best Chinese food I've found in Edenvale.
This restaurant holds a special place in my heart! It’s where I officially met my in-laws for the first time, and it was a truly enchanting evening. My mother-in-law often orders takeout from here because she adores the quality of the food. Last Sunday, we had friends visiting from Taiwan who hadn’t had any Chinese food during their trip, so we thought Lu Dong would be the ideal choice. As always, the food was nothing short of amazing, and the service was excellent as well. I absolutely love their dumplings, vegetables, and tofu (it’s similar to mapo tofu, but without the meat). It’s definitely a hidden gem!
