This family-run establishment, operated by two sisters, offers an impressive sushi experience despite its unassuming setting. The menu features a wide range of options, from straightforward and classic rolls to more artistic and intricate creations. The owners often explore their creativity by inventing new rolls, and I've never encountered a disappointing one. I usually opt for the à la carte to-go option, and it has never let me down. One of the standout aspects of Fuji for me is its convenient location; I can easily call in an order, pick it up promptly, and be on my way. Don’t be misled by the modest appearance of the restaurant—Fuji Sushi offers excellent quality sushi at affordable prices.
Fuji is one of our favorite family restaurants in town. While I've dined at places with higher-quality and more diverse sushi options, I don't think there's a better value for sushi anywhere than at Fuji. The adult buffet is just $12, kids aged 4 and up eat for $3.50, and children under 4 can dine for free. The buffet is consistently well-stocked with a variety of rolls, including spicy and cream cheese with shrimp, salmon, and tuna, along with vegetable rolls, sweet potato rolls, and tempura rolls. They always have fresh sashimi, including tuna and salmon, plus nigiri options like tuna, salmon, and BBQ eel. The fish and rolls are always fresh, and the eel is particularly delicious. Fuji has even inspired our kids (ages 4 and 6) to love sushi. We appreciate that they can explore sushi while still having access to a wide range of traditional hot and cold Chinese buffet dishes. Everyone enjoys the dessert option too, which includes ice cream complete with sprinkles and gummy bears. The dining area may not be luxurious, but it is always clean, and the staff are friendly. If you're looking for budget-friendly sushi, I highly recommend Fuji.
That was then, and this is now. We went in a few months ago and found the restaurant uncomfortably warm—almost muggy, which is unappealing for a sushi place. How long can uncooked fish safely sit in that kind of heat? The sushi we had didn’t seem fresh (it felt like leftovers from the night before), and the rice in some rolls was overcooked and gooey, which was very off-putting. The floor was sticky everywhere, the tuna looked gray, and the hot bar items had congealed, obviously sitting out for hours without being managed or replaced. Additionally, there comes a point when kids in the dining area lose their charm; it was distracting and disruptive. They were always there, watching cartoons or children's shows at obnoxious volumes. I decided to give them another chance—maybe it was just a bad day—but when we returned a few weeks later, it was even worse. The place smelled, and the food was definitely not fresh. Kids were running around, and I almost dropped a plate and a bowl of soup. It was evident that the floor hadn’t been cleaned since our last visit. They may have been a decent spot a few years ago, but they’ve really declined. It's no longer worth it to risk my health by eating there again. I left feeling like I was coated in a thin layer of filth. I’m really disappointed because this used to be one of my favorite go-to spots for a quick meal.
I have to remove 2 stars. We visited this restaurant yesterday evening for dinner, and I was very grossed out by how disgusting the restaurant was. Even the air circulating through the room felt unclean! When I went into the bathroom, it was so dirty that I questioned if I should wash my hands. It looked like they would be dirtier if I went through the process of it. Even though it looked like somebody had wiped down the sink, there was brown gunk all around the faucet that could have easily been cleaned up if somebody had bothered. The container that holds onto the towels people are supposed to use to dry their hands after they wash them is so filthy that there's no way it could give you a clean towel. And they still haven't fixed the lock on the bathroom door. It's incredibly flimsy and does not look secure at all. Even though we've always enjoyed the sushi, I am never returning to this restaurant. I would rather go to Dongpo and purchase their sushi by the roll.
I 'm not a sushi snob I 'm perfectly satisfied eating grocery store or mall food court sushi, so when I read the reviews, this place sounded right up my alley. Fuji Sushi, however served quite literally the worst sushi I 've ever had. And for Appleton, the price really wasn 't that economical you can buy two basic rolls at any of the 'regular suspect ' sushi places around town for the same price. The selection is extremely limited mostly to rolls with shredded fish, cream cheese, and/or flavored mayonnaise. The 'tempura ' rolls were something I 've never seen they were typical rolls, but the entire ROLL was coated in thick batter (I 'm talking outside of the rice) and fried. Turns out there was a good reason I 've never seen it done that way before they were absolutely dreadful. Having quickly given up on the sushi, I tried to fill up on 'hot food ', which consisted of soggy General Tso 's and bland teriyaki chicken, so I gave up on that as well. I turned to the last resort the typical Chinese buffet selection of desserts, and even THOSE were terrible. How can you mess up an Oreo? When it has the consistency of a sponge from having sat on the buffet for days, covered by a damp cloth. I ended up finishing my meal with a plate full of M&M 's, which were the only dessert that wasn 't horribly stale. Needless to say, we won 't be returning. At least we had a good laugh later in the day when we gave the fortune cookies to our kids, and even they (5 and 10 years old) complained that they were too stale to eat!
