The side dishes are good as well. Amarillo has many great restaurants, but I always choose to eat at this place when I am in town. Another habit of mine is to order enough brisket (the moist brisket) to take home and enjoy the next day. A word of caution when getting the moist brisket - be careful as it tends to leak through the paper bags they provide. However, the delicious brisket is well worth the risk of a stained shirt.
The distinctive pink "ring" on each slice of brisket indicates that it has been carefully smoked for a long period of time. Whether it's the use of oak wood to smoke the meat or the time and attention given to it, I'm not sure. What I can say is that Rudy’s brisket has a unique flavor that I haven't been able to find at any other BBQ joint we visited on our trip. We enjoyed it so much that we even went back for breakfast burritos the next morning as we left the city. I also want to mention the friendly morning staff that made our wake-up experience pleasant. As a very picky eater, I rarely give restaurants a solid 5-star rating on TripAdvisor, but Rudy’s in Amarillo, Texas definitely deserves it!
I was quite surprised by the negative review I read recently. My wife and I stopped by yesterday around 5PM and we were pleasantly surprised by the cheerful and engaging staff. We both found our pulled pork sandwiches to be absolutely delicious - some of the best we've ever had. I would highly recommend this place. It's worth noting that they weren't very busy at that time, but we still thought the food was amazing!
In Amarillo on a Sunday night, desperate to find a place not crowded with unmasked Texans, we went to Rudy's. The best summary of the meal was people chow. My wife and I had baked potatoes with pulled pork, I had a side of cole slaw. The football-sized potato was overbaked, mealy and flavorless. The pulled pork was greasy and, well, flavorless. The sauce, not the one labeled not for sissies ketchup with some peppers added. The cole slaw was stale cabbage with no flavor.... So I guess that sums up the meal, flavorless. At least the free peppers were good, the jalapenos. The cherry peppers, you guessed it, flavorless. People chow. The best thing I can say is it wasn't crowded with unmasked Texans. Now we know why.
